Begin with the last ordinary day
What did you actually reach for while you were out yesterday? Perhaps a lip product, a compact mirror and a tissue were enough. A carrying bag and a home makeup collection have different jobs. The bag only needs to support the changes you make between leaving home and returning.
Empty it onto a clean surface and look for duplicates. Two similar lip colours may be useful if you genuinely choose between them. Several almost-empty products can simply make it harder to find the one you want. Check the condition and manufacturer guidance for each item before deciding what returns.
Give each item a reason
A product earns space when it answers a likely situation. A powder compact might be useful before a meeting; the whole eyeshadow palette may never open outside your bedroom. Do not pack around an elaborate emergency routine you have never performed. Carrying less also makes it easier to notice when something leaks or needs replacing.
Think about the tools a product requires. A small pot that needs a separate clean brush is not necessarily more convenient than a slightly larger self-contained option. Avoid transferring cosmetics into unidentified containers just to save space. You need to retain the information that tells you what the product is and how to use and store it.
Choose a bag you can see into
A wide opening usually helps more than extra internal pockets. Dark linings can make small dark objects difficult to find. Test the bag with the products you already own, including the mirror or compact that has the least flexible shape. The zip should close without pressing hard against lids.
Protect brushes and keep product caps secure. Clean the bag according to its material instructions and allow it to dry before refilling. A wipeable lining is convenient only if you actually inspect it; spills can still hide beneath the contents. Do not put the bag somewhere hot simply because it fits there.
Keep a separate occasional kit
A full evening change or overnight trip may justify more products. Pack those for the particular event instead of carrying them every day. If your routine changes, edit the bag again. The useful collection is the one that reflects what you do now, with everything easy to find and no requirement to use makeup at all.
