Choose a time when the brushes can wait
Washing brushes just before applying makeup creates an avoidable problem: the tools you need are now wet. Pick a point in the day when you can leave them alone afterwards. The exact drying time varies with the brush, so do not promise yourself that a dense head will be ready in an hour.
Gather the tools you actually used, a clean towel and the cleaning product recommended for them. Leave unused clean brushes in their storage. Keeping the task small makes it easier to repeat and avoids turning an ordinary cleaning job into an afternoon spent sorting the whole dressing table.
Clean the heads carefully
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing makeup brushes every seven to ten days. Its guidance uses lukewarm water and gentle or clarifying shampoo, rinsing the bristle tips until the water is clear. Avoid immersing the whole head and handle joint, which can affect the glue. Check any additional instructions supplied with your particular brushes.
Work with one brush at a time so you can see when residue has been removed. Do not assume that a strongly coloured brush needs aggressive scrubbing. Follow the cleaning directions and handle the bristles gently. Inspect the handle and joint too; a damaged brush may need replacing rather than another attempt to make it work.
Set up the drying area
After removing excess moisture with a clean paper towel, the AAD advises laying brushes flat on a towel with their tips extending beyond the counter edge. It advises against drying them upright, where water can travel down towards the handle joint. Choose a secure place where the brushes will not be knocked onto the floor or touched by pets.
This arrangement needs a little clear space. Move the makeup bag and bottles first instead of balancing wet brushes between them. If your bathroom counter is too small, use another suitable surface where the tools can remain undisturbed. Do not leave them on a shared dining surface that will need clearing immediately.
Put them away only when ready
Check that each brush is dry before returning it to a closed case. A roll or zipped bag is useful for clean, dry tools, but it is not a drying rack. If you need makeup before the brushes are ready, choose a routine that does not require those tools rather than rushing the process with improvised heat.
Clean the storage area while it is empty. Old powder at the bottom of a cup can transfer back onto handles, and an overcrowded container can bend bristles. Return only the brushes that belong there, with enough room to remove one without pulling out several.
A wash-day arrangement for a small bathroom
Imagine that your only bathroom counter has room for a toothbrush cup and very little else. You can still separate the washing and drying stages. Prepare a clean towel on a suitable stable surface elsewhere, carry the washed brushes there carefully and keep that space available until they are ready. The important distinction is between a surface that happens to be empty now and one that will remain undisturbed.
If several people use the room, let them know where the brushes are drying. A small tray beneath the towel can make the group recognisable and easier to protect from unrelated objects, provided it allows the recommended flat arrangement. Do not use a container that encourages you to stand the wet heads upright simply because it occupies less counter space.
Plan the next application around the tools you have available. You might wash the brushes after the last makeup application of the day, with no commitment to use them early the next morning. If that timing is never realistic, a smaller everyday brush collection may be easier to maintain. Buying duplicates can create twice as many tools to wash without fixing the lack of drying space.
Make the next wash easier
If you repeatedly postpone the job, reduce the number of brushes in everyday use or connect cleaning to an existing weekly task. Keep the instructions somewhere accessible. The aim is a routine that happens consistently, including the quiet drying stage after the visible washing is over.
