Leave a little room
A white shirt can feel as though it belongs to a meeting even when the rest of the day involves a market and a late lunch. Usually the answer is already in the way it is worn. Buttoning it to the neck, pressing the cuffs flat and tucking it tightly into a waistband creates a different impression from an open collar and a hem that moves.
Start with the shirt you own. A crisp cotton version holds a shape and can stand away from the body. A softer shirt falls closer and often works with a loose tuck. Neither needs to become a beach cover-up to look at home on Saturday. Wear it for a few minutes before arranging every fold; the fabric's natural behaviour is part of the outfit.
Choose the bottom half first
Straight jeans are an obvious partner, but they are not the only one. A cotton skirt makes the shirt feel lighter, while relaxed dark trousers give it a quieter appearance. Shorts can work too, provided the shirt hem and shorts do not finish at such similar points that the lower half disappears whenever you move.
With a full skirt, try leaving only the front of the shirt loosely tucked. With a narrower skirt, an untucked hem may give the whole outfit enough ease. Look from the side as well as the front. Extra fabric gathers differently around each waistband, and a tuck that looks tidy standing up may pull when you sit.
Let the small choices stay small
Turn a cuff back once or twice if it stays comfortably in place. There is no need to roll both sleeves to an exact height. A flat sandal, trainer or loafer can set the level of formality without a collection of extra accessories. If the shirt is slightly sheer, choose the layer beneath it deliberately and check it in daylight before leaving.
White also makes nearby marks visible. Look at the collar and cuffs while the shirt is still on its hanger, rather than finding a stain after you have dressed. Keep a simple alternative ready for a day involving messy jobs. The point of wearing a good shirt on an ordinary day is to enjoy it, not to spend the afternoon protecting it from normal life.
